The UMCOR Hotline for April 6, 2016

UMCOR is working in partnership with the Malawi United Methodist Church to deliver dry foods to families in need.
The current El Niño weather pattern impacting countries in southern and eastern Africa has brought serious concern about widespread drought, which inevitably leads to critical food shortages.

In Malawi, the drought has already affected crop production, especially in the shortage of harvests of maize, a major food staple. It is the first maize deficit in a decade, and Malawi is having to import 50,000 tons of maize from neighboring Tanzania.

UMCOR is working in partnership with the Malawi United Methodist Church to alleviate hunger through a project focusing on the Madisi area in Malawi’s central region of Dowa. The partnership is ensuring delivery of dry rations like maize, beans, and salt to families in need. For families that include pregnant women, children, and people living with HIV/AIDS, a nutritious porridge will be provided to fortify their daily diet.

Last fall, rainfall levels broke all records in eastern Tamil Nadu state in India. Over a 24-hour period, six inches of rain fell causing massive flooding. The flooding affected more than 68 million people, and left about 200,000 people homeless.

In this video produced by UMCOR partner GlobalMedic, learn how communities were able to access clean water through the installation of water purification units provided through GlobalMedic with support from UMCOR. Food packs, water, sanitation and hygiene programming, as well as hygiene items were provided for more than 700 families.
