UMCOR Creation Care Program
When war, conflict or disaster disrupt life, United Methodists respond to the needs of vulnerable people through the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Working alongside UMCOR, the Global Ministries Global Health unit supports vulnerable communities to build resilience and mitigate risk.
Recognizing that climate change and environmental degradation increase disaster risk, the UMCOR Creation Care program looks inward at the work of UMCOR and Global Ministries and outward at the ministries of The United Methodist Church to equip the church to address modes of living and working that contribute to climate change and environmental degradation. These include wasteful consumption, deforestation, poor water management, and agricultural practices that diminish the land.
"Active faith participates in the perfecting and fulfilling grace of God, which claims and implements the promises of God to deliver exploited persons and oppressed peoples, to restore the sanctity and integrity of God’s creation, and to reconcile division in the households of faith and among the peoples and nations of the earth as all of creation groans for redemption."
----Global Ministries Theology of Mission
The Creation Care program works at the intersection of deliverance, reconciliation, and restoration of God’s creation. Projects include:
• Evaluating UMCOR’s ministries for opportunities to integrate sustainable practices into its operations and projects.
• Discerning the ways in which Global Ministries’ role in the denominational mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world should inform our theological and practical responses to the environmental crisis.
• Equipping lay and clergy environmental leaders to launch projects in their communities that promote sustainability locally and systemically.
• Deepening relationships with denominational and ecumenical leaders to enhance the global witness of The United Methodist Church on behalf of Gods’ creation.
