The UMCOR Hotline for February 24, 2016

In this week’s issue of the UMCOR Hotline, learn about the completion of five evacuation shelters in the Philippines, and get resources for One Great Hour of Sharing, March 6.

More than two years ago, Super Typhoon Yolanda (also known as Typhoon Haiyan), was the strongest and deadliest typhoon ever to strike the Philippines. The storm affected 16 million people, displaced more than four million from their homes, and took an estimated 6,300 lives.

Earlier this month, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) celebrated two powerful achievements in Leyte province, a region hardest-hit by Yolanda. UMCOR, working with local partners and communities, completed construction of 134 sturdy new homes for Leyte residents, and also completed its fifth public evacuation shelter, in the town of San Jose. The shelter was formally handed over to the community in a February 8 ceremony.

View some of the images from this special celebration, and read more about this work that is providing protection from future typhoons or storm surges.

You can also support UMCOR in its response to disasters around the world by giving to International Disaster Response, Advance #982450.

One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) is Sunday, March 6. It is one of the six United Methodist church-wide Special Sundays with offerings.

OGHS enables UMCOR to live out its mission to alleviate human suffering and respond to natural or human-caused disasters. And, it’s your gifts that make it possible for UMCOR to use 100 percent of all other contributions on the projects our donors specify, instead of on administrative or fundraising costs.

UMCOR does not receive United Methodist World Service or apportionment funds, so without your offerings, UMCOR would not exist.

Use these available resources and empower your congregation to give on March 6.

Download and share an OGHS church bulletin, poster, and a Pastor and Leader’s Kit. This kit includes plenty of new social media banners for Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter networks, as well as website banners and wallpapers for five smartphone platforms. Also view the Annual Conference Communicator Pastor and Leaders Kit for similar resources.

For 10 ways to promote OGHS and the work of UMCOR, download this e-book, “How to Promote One Great Hour of Sharing in Your Congregation.”
