Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security
Approximately 842 million people are estimated to be suffering from food insecurity or chronic hunger. Chronic hunger kills more people every year than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined; poor nutrition causes 45 percent of deaths in children under five – 3.1 million children each year – and iron deficiencies cause 315,000 women to die from hemorrhaging during childbirth every year.
UMCOR’s Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security program focuses on partnering with organizations that empower families and communities to create self-help and sustainable solutions to address food insecurity.
Its key priorities are:
- Providing resources and technical support rural families need to grow or buy enough food to maintain a healthy and productive life.
- Building the capacity of farmers, pastoralists and fishermen to reverse the trend of poor land and water resource management.
- Strengthening the impact of agricultural projects by improving household health and nutrition behaviors (nutrition-sensitive agriculture) with a specific focus on pregnant and lactating women and children under age 5.
- Supporting the introduction and/or use of appropriate agricultural technology that is suitable to the knowledge, skills, capacities, interest, and economics of the people and communities.
UMCOR supports global food security and nutrition targets by working as a funding and technical partner to national and local organizations both in the US and internationally. Through UMCOR’s Country Offices, it also directly implements projects and supports United Methodist congregations to develop and partner with these entities to provide effective services. UMCOR is currently partnering with 18 organizations to implement 23 Food Security projects in 22 countries including the US.
