NEWS: PREPARED IN TIMES OF DISASTER
Be in-the-know about hurricane or disaster preparedness.
Alex, Bonnie, Colin, Danielle, Earl, Hermine, and Newton all sound like the start of a guest list for dinner. But this ‘guest’ list is really a series of tropical storms and hurricanes, some of which arrived long before the ringing of the dinner bell—the official start of the hurricane season (June 1-Nov. 30).

This year, weather forecasters predict that the 2016 Atlantic Hurricane season will be an above average season, and the most active since 2012.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) knows that individuals, churches, and communities must always be in a state of preparedness because disasters can strike at any time. Being prepared means that you have a sense of control and hope during an unexpected event, and you are in a better position to assist your neighbors.

Here are a few things you should know or consider when a disaster strikes: You can help UMCOR respond quickly and efficiently to future disasters with your faithful giving to U.S. Disaster Response, Advance #901670.

MEDIA: SCHOOL KITS BRING HOPE
Students in Cambodia hold up their newly received UMCOR school kits, which were distributed by partner International Relief and Development.
In developing countries, a pencil and a piece of paper can mean the world for children without access to basic school supplies. For most, receiving a school kit is serious business because it provides hope for a real future.

Eang, a fifth grader, living in rural Kampong Leaeng district in Cambodia, is one school-kit recipient who doesn’t take his education for granted. He said, “Before having this kit, I had only a half pencil and a thin notebook that would last just three months. Now I have everything I need to study for a whole year!”

When your church community assembles school kits, you give children hope and the opportunity to learn because now they are equipped with the proper resources.

Provide that opportunity now by preparing an UMCOR school kit. Please take a moment to watch this video to learn what goes into each kit.
