NEWS: UMCOR RESPONDS TO TEXAS FLOODS
The southeast Texas town of Deweyville, Texas, experienced heavy flooding during Holy Week last month, including the Deweyville United Methodist Church, shown here.
In April, several rounds of heavy rain and surging waters deluged parts of Houston, Texas, killing about seven people and leaving thousands of homes and businesses flooded and without power.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) responded to a request from the Texas Annual Conference for an emergency grant to address extensive flooding in the conference. The funding will help facilitate and mobilize Early Response Teams, support the local church in helping to shelter survivors who have been evacuated from their flooded communities, and provide UMCOR relief-supply kits.

Several teams of United Methodist volunteers who are trained in disaster child care worked in collaboration with UMCOR partner Church of the Brethren and were deployed to Red Cross shelters in the affected areas.

Greg Forrester, U.S. Disaster Response executive for UMCOR, said daily regional conference calls were occurring with the voluntary response agencies in conjunction with the Texas office of Emergency Management.
