NEWS: MALAWI FOOD AID
After a lack of rainfall stemming from El Niño weather patterns, Malawi is facing a critical food shortage. Many households have harvested little to no maize since March 2016.

In the Salima district, where more than 80 percent of residents live below the poverty line, there are currently 62,301 individuals facing acute food shortages.

In July, the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee reported that more than 2.8 million people will not be able to meet their annual food requirements through this year. The government of Malawi projects that food assistance will be required until the next March 2017 harvest.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is responding by supporting partner World Relief in providing food aid to 5,225 people (about 950 households) in Salima. The funding will provide beneficiaries with maize, pulses, corn-soy blend, and oil, in accordance with best humanitarian practices and international guidelines.

World Relief will identify the most vulnerable households and develop a beneficiaries register for the printing and distribution of ration cards in Salima.

NEWS: UMCOR AWARDED FOUR STARS FROM CHARITY NAVIGATOR
Charity Navigator, the highly respected charity evaluator, has awarded UMCOR its top charity rating—four stars—for UMCOR’s excellent performance in the two broad categories assessed: financial health and accountability and transparency.

“We appreciate this rating because we know donors are looking for unbiased information to help them evaluate the integrity of the organizations they contribute to,” said Roland Fernandes, chief operating officer and general treasurer of the General Board of Global Ministries, of which UMCOR is a part.

Charity Navigator uses a team of professional analysts to evaluate the financial documents of U.S.-based nonprofit organizations. UMCOR is among more than 8,000 such organizations Charity Navigator reviews each year.

“Our ratings show givers how efficiently we believe a charity will use their support today, how well it has sustained its programs and services over time and their level of commitment to good governance, best practices and openness with information,” Charity Navigator explains on its website.

“UMCOR is proud to be recognized by Charity Navigator as an organization that has earned—and continually seeks to earn—the trust of our supporters and partners,” Fernandes said.

MEDIA: UMCOR SCHOOL KITS REACH CHILDREN IN RURAL CAMBODIA

Nearly 17,000 UMCOR school kits have reached children in rural Cambodia this year.

UMCOR partner International Relief and Development delivered the school kits to the most vulnerable children living in rural poverty in Kampong Chhnang province.

Ten-year-old student Eang Eng said, “Before having this kit, I had only a half pencil and a thin notebook that would last just three months. Now I have everything I need to study for a whole year!”

Watch a slideshow of the school kit distribution and learn how you can assemble these relief-supply kits.
