NEWS: RELIEF FROM CONFLICT IN DR CONGO
Displaced families in DR Congo will receive food relief with the help from UMCOR as it provides funding support to the Methodist Church there.
Thomas Kemper, general secretary for Global Ministries, opened UMCOR’s annual meeting with an address that highlighted United Methodist theology on disaster relief and rehabilitation. The week-long meeting was held at New York headquarters last week.

In his address, Kemper posed a question to UMCOR headquarters and country office staff: “Why are we doing what we do in the context of the church’s ministry?” He examined biblical roots of disaster response and noted that when Jesus’ disciples sent help to believers in Judea who were experiencing famine (Acts 11:27-30), it was perhaps “the first Christian collection for disaster relief.”

Kemper also combed through UMCOR history, from the organization’s wartime beginnings in 1940 through its establishment as a permanent agency in 1972 with administration entrusted to Global Ministries.

UMCOR’s annual meeting was a time for program staff to come together and review best practices, strengthen program development, align with the agency’s strategic plan, discuss policy updates, and more.
