NEWS: CHINA EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE
China earthquake survivors receive plastic sheeting, which serves as temporary shelter and also protects them from the cold weather.
On April 20, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Lushan County of Ya’an City, Sichuan Province, China, leaving at least 186 people dead, 25 missing, and about 11,460 people injured. About 2,163 aftershocks in the epicenter area caused the collapse of more than 60 percent of the homes.

UMCOR is walking alongside the church and local partners in China as they provide emergency relief and assistance to those most affected.

UMCOR is supporting partner Amity Foundation, which has distributed instant foods such as noodles, biscuits, bread, and bottled water, and is providing rice and cooking oil along with quilts and plastic sheeting to help survivors bear the cold weather. The rehabilitation of eight drinking water systems will allow survivors access to clean and safe water.

Amity Foundation will rebuild 400 homes for families with limited resources, and provide small cash grants to help families resume agricultural activities. In addition, psychosocial assistance through community events will help survivors return to some sense of normalcy.

UMCOR is also funding partner China Christian Council to provide priority medical services for the elderly, vulnerable women, and children in Ya’an who are experiencing discomfort, dizziness, or who have other specific medical needs. China Christian Council plans to organize medical teams from churches in Sichuan to offer free diagnosis and medicine to all the people in need.

PRAYER: FLOOD SURVIVORS
A volunteer helps unload several cleaning buckets off a truck for distribution to Herkimer County, NY, residents who were affected by severe flooding.
Eastern parts of Central New York remain under water after heavy rains caused severe flooding and damage that forced people from their homes last week. Pray for New York and Pennsylvania residents affected by flash floods, specifically in Herkimer County, Fort Plain in Montgomery County, Oneida in Madison Country, New York, and Dubois in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania.

In addition, several rounds of heavy rain shut down roads in Decatur, Alabama. The same weather system dumped more than 10 inches of rain in Panama City Beach, Florida, flooding dozens of buildings. Intercede with Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
