NEWS: VIOLENCE SURGES IN DARFUR
Juliet Stein (with microphone) and Amber Kubera (left) in Abu Senadera, East Darfur State, Sudan, where UMCOR just completed construction of a very large “hafir” or water point, part of UMCOR’s vital peace building work with the community. In recent days, violence has surged in the region.
Last week, UMCOR Sudan Head of Mission Juliet Stein and Senior Program Manager Amber Kubera visited a school and water points constructed by UMCOR in East Darfur State, Sudan. Many from the community came out to greet them, as did members of the parent association, which was organized by UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief.

School construction and access to water points for people and livestock are a vital part of the peace building work UMCOR does in Darfur, as it aims to bring together communities divided along tribal and agro-pastoralist lines. UMCOR facilitates peace committees, works with women’s groups and young people on peace building efforts, and strives to decrease tensions that arise from use of shared, often scarce, natural resources.

In the past few days, tribal violence in the region has reached heights not seen in recent years, with more than 100 people killed or injured in fighting across East Darfur State, where UMCOR does most of its work. This has led to insecurity and displacements for all individuals in the region, underscoring the importance of continued peace building efforts.

Your support for UMCOR’s peace building work in East Darfur State is urgently needed. Please give to Sudan Emergency, UMCOR Advance #184385. Give now

Typhoon Utor (known locally as Labuyo) battered the northern Philippines early this week, toppling power lines, dumping heavy rain across mountains, and creating landslides.
