NEWS: SUCCOR FOR STORMY SEASON IN THE PHILIPPINES

The Philippines has a record of being battered by an inordinate number of storms and typhoons. This year is no exception. Typhoon Saola (also known as Gener) tore into the region on August 1, met up with seasonal monsoon rains already soaking the country, and amplified them hugely.

The resulting torrential rains and storm surges forced local authorities to declare a state of emergency. More than 270,000 people fled their homes.

UMCOR Philippines has provided food packages to families in communities from Novotas, north of the capital, down to Batangas, on the coast further south. Working with local partner institutions, including the Manila Episcopal Area of The United Methodist Church and the Methodist-founded Harris Memorial College, UMCOR also got food to residents of Antipolo and Dambana.

In Santa Cruz, Laguna, UMCOR joined forces with international partner GlobalMedic, whose specialist team arrived in mid-August, to provide potable drinking water, meeting the daily needs of displaced families in 10 evacuation areas.

The Saola/Gener emergency is, of course, far from the end of the story, as more storms are swirling in the region, further threatening this already flooded nation. Read more about preparation for and response to these and other storms in the Philippines.

Your gift to Philippines Emergency, UMCOR Advance #240235, will support relief efforts in Filipino communities impacted by disasters such as this one.

HURRICANE ISAAC

Pray for the waterlogged Gulf Coast, which Hurricane Isaac hammered with torrential rain, high winds, tornadoes, and damaging storm surge. Pray for the many families who must now pick up the pieces after this devastating event, and for those who are helping them.

You can help with your contribution to UMCOR US Disaster Response. Now you can text your $10 gift. Text RESPONSE to 80888 to give a $10 donation to provide immediate relief to those affected by Hurricane Isaac.

Your prayers also are asked for the Methodist Church of Haiti (EMH), UMCOR staff, and partners from within Haiti and around the world who are meeting in Port-au-Prince this week to continue coordinating post-earthquake recovery and development efforts.

MEDIA: HURRICANE IRENE VIDEO

Even as the people of the Gulf Coast reel from Hurricane Isaac, residents of upstate New York and of other states affected last year by Hurricane Irene continue pursuing recovery. Watch a new UMCOR video about the ways United Methodists are offering hope over the long, slow course of recovery.
