NEWS: UMCOR TRAINS 10,000 EARLY RESPONDERS
The United Methodist Committee on Relief’s (UMCOR) US disaster-response program has recently reached a milestone of training 10,000 Early Response Team (ERT) volunteers.
ERTs are credentialed volunteers who are trained and prepared to go into an area shortly after a disaster takes place. UMCOR has developed special training and credentials to help ERTs move quickly into a disaster zone to provide help once they are officially deployed. Once trained, ERTs may be deployed for a disaster local to them or to one out of state.
Julie Pohl, disaster-response coordinator for the Kansas East Annual Conference, has trained dozens of ERTs. UMCOR's training has imprinted the future of disaster volunteerism, Pohl reflected.
“Training and credentialing are more important than ever,” she said. “Our emergency managers are holding our feet to the fire as to who they allow into a disaster site. It's harder and harder for unaffiliated volunteers to find a way in.”

PRAYER: MOSQUITO NET DISTRIBUTION
Pray for the upcoming mosquito-net distribution in West Angola slated to take place October 10 – 20. Approximately 9,000 nets purchased through a contribution from Rocky Mountain Annual Conference will be distributed in this first Imagine No Malaria initiative in Angola.

10-Fold will begin on October 1! This year’s 10-Fold will be a five-week event that will focus on a new project each week. Week one will feature UMCOR’s disaster relief work followed by young people in mission, mission initiatives, missionaries, and fair trade.
