NEWS: STRATEGIES FOR MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH

In many countries, up to 20 percent of children die before their fifth birthday from preventable diseases such as pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria. In addition, more than 300,000 women die during pregnancy and childbirth each year. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is trying to turn these statistics around with its comprehensive maternal and child survival program.

Access to basic health care can dramatically increase the health of mothers and their babies. UMCOR supports prenatal clinics and clinics for children under the age of five, as well as training events for traditional birth attendants. UMCOR also educates mothers. This program emphasizes four basic health strategies: nutrition, oral rehydration, immunization, and growth monitoring. Read more.

Give to help mothers and their children by contributing to the Maternal and Child Survival Program, UMCOR Advance #982645.

PRAYER: HAITI PARTNERS

Pray for the Haiti Mission Partners Meeting that is taking place in Orlando, Florida, this week, as they gather to examine new ways to collaborate with the people of Haiti to advance recovery from the January 2010 earthquake there.

Praise for safe travels of UMCOR Global Health Director Shannon Trilli to and from South Sudan where she met with partners to consider more community health programming there.

MEDIA: TEXT TO GIVE AND FIGHT HIV/AIDS

Support the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund through the new text-to-give campaign. Text HEALTH to 80888 to give $10 to support education, prevention, care, and treatment programs for people living with HIV/AIDS. Learn more.

RESOURCE: CONNECTING NEIGHBORS

The Connecting Neighbors leadership training program is a one-day, disaster-readiness program for local churches, designed to equip volunteer trainers with the information and tools they need to help guide the church as it prepares to respond to disaster in the community. Use this flyer to learn more and promote this important UMCOR program.

BE SURE TO RECEIVE THE WEEKLY HOTLINE. Some Internet Service Providers like AOL, Yahoo!, Hotmail, and Juno use email filtering software that allows you to add email addresses to a "buddy," "trusted," "safe," or approved list. Please add umcor@umcor.org to your list so that UMCOR messages don't end up in "junk mail" or the "trash."
