The UMCOR Hotline
NEWS: OVERCOMING ADDICTION
If you think addiction is not an issue in your church, think again. According to one study, one in four children under the age of 18 in the United States is exposed to alcohol abuse and dependence in the family.
That’s why UMCOR collaborates with the United Methodist Special Program on Substance Abuse and Related Violence, or SPSARV. The group provides resources for churches and individuals to help them avoid, recognize, and recover from addiction.
When pastors and congregations are educated about the disease of addiction and the resources available, the church can be a place of true recovery. Read more.
PRAYERS: BISHOP HARVEY ASSUMES HER NEW POST
Your prayers are asked for Bishop Cynthia Fierro Harvey, former UMCOR head, as she assumes her new post leading the Louisiana Annual Conference. Please keep UMCOR in your prayers during the transition that follows her departure.
MEDIA: UMCOR SAGER BROWN VOLUNTEERS
View a new video that captures the labor of love and dedication of those who come, some repeatedly, to UMCOR Sager Brown in Baldwin, Louisiana, to lend a hand to those in need. Sager Brown volunteers prepare relief kits and work with surrounding communities of Baldwin to fill those gaps of need.
RESOURCE: GETTING AHEAD OF DISASTERS
Through a process called Disaster Risk Reduction, or DRR, UMCOR helps communities organize themselves and develop a system of lifesaving communication so they can respond effectively when disaster looms.
But DRR training does even more. It enables communities to reduce the impact of future emergencies by helping them identify and address natural or human-made hazards in their midst. A new UMCOR church bulletin insert tells more and invites your support.
UMCOR provides emergency relief in many areas of the world. To find out more about UMCOR's ministries, please visit umcor.org. You can donate to any project by placing a contribution in the offering plate at a local United Methodist church; by sending a check to UMCOR, PO Box 9068, New York, NY 10087-9068; or by calling 1-800-554-8583, where credit card donations are accepted. You can also give online by clicking any of the "DONATE" links or make a $10 donation anytime by texting “UMCOR” to 80888. UMCOR is exempt from tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of the United States and qualifies for the maximum charitable contribution deduction by donors.
And, please pray for those who are hungry, displaced, sick or in poverty because of these and other natural and human-made disasters, and for the workers who minister to them.
BE SURE TO RECEIVE THE WEEKLY HOTLINE. Some Internet Service Providers like AOL, Yahoo!, Hotmail, and Juno use email filtering software that allows you to add email addresses to a "buddy," "trusted," "safe," or approved list. Please add email@example.com to your list so that UMCOR messages don't end up in "junk mail" or the "trash."
