HORN OF AFRICA: UMCOR TO PROVIDE FAMINE RELIEF

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is holding conversations with partner organizations working in the Horn of Africa and planning a regional response to the growing hunger crisis provoked by severe drought in the region.

Years of drought in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti have escalated in recent weeks, causing widespread hunger and, in two regions of southern Somalia, famine.

“UMCOR is working with our partners to act as quickly and as comprehensively as possible,” reported Melissa Crutchfield, UMCOR executive for International Disaster Response. “While we do, we ask for your continued prayers and support for those affected by this crisis.”

Your help is urgently needed. Please give to International Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #982450, and earmark your gift for Horn of Africa Crisis. GIVE NOW

HAITI: GIVING STUDENTS A SAFE PLACE TO STUDY

UMCOR is working with St. Martin School and Church to reconstruct the permanent facilities that were completely destroyed in the January 2010 earthquake. During the summer break, UMCOR and the Methodist Church of Haiti (EMH) are working together to remove the damaged buildings and construct the ground floor of the new school.

This first phase of construction will allow students to start the 2011-2012 school year in a permanent structure. The full structures, along with toilet facilities, will be completed by December 2011. This school will serve at least 193 students, nine teachers, and five staff members.

US: REFUGEE MINISTRY GRANTS

UMCOR's Refugee Ministry office makes several grants available each year, through the Refugee Ministry Grants program. Projects that serve refugees, immigrants, detainees, and asylum seekers, and have as a significant partner a UMC congregation or conference are eligible to apply.

Grants up to $5,000 may be made to eligible projects or organizations, with special consideration given to requests less than $5,000. The purpose of these grants is to build capacity, provide direct assistance, and encourage and honor the commitment of organizations and congregations that welcome the sojourner, the newcomer, and the stranger.
